Hi all! I recently received an email from Dotti Turner who has been a long-time SIM professional developer. (See it below.) She has been using Zoom in several creative ways. I know that many of you suspended giving workshops during Covid, but school personnel are coming alive. They now know that they need to do something to improve their achievement scores. Students’ abysmal scores are national news these days. With Covid heating up again, you might be feeling reluctant to go out to the schools. However, you might consider implementing some of Dotti’s ideas to help teachers help their students. This is a national tragedy that we all have the skills, knowledge, and tools to address. Please let me know how things are going for you in your area and if there’s anything I can do to assist you. Thanks for ALL you continue to do. Jean Schumaker

Subject: RE: Just FYI
Hi Jean, I am working with Longwood, Western Suffolk BOCES, and Garden City. All are doing writing. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow I have 20-minute meetings with every Garden City special education teacher to set goals and plan PD. This is the third year there. We started with a small group of volunteers, expanded last year, and this year everyone is involved. It is all through zoom. I do a lot of zoom demo lessons and meet with every teacher regularly. I like to do zoom describe of topic sentences with the class and then debrief to talk about next steps. Then I do the same for details and then the same for clinchers with some check-ins along the way. We haven’t started Theme Writing yet, but I am hoping to introduce it later in the year. I am loving working through zoom. I can pop in and out of classes and meet teachers whenever they want or do lessons for them as opposed to going to a district a couple of set days! I can also do lessons while multiple teachers watch. Last year I did several lessons with a HS class while every English class and teacher in the school watched. Districts used to have to hire subs so that teachers could watch me, but that is no longer necessary!
Sure, that would be fine! I come on the SmartBoard for the picture – me plus my PowerPoint. They also log on to a chrome book as the microphone.
I have a PowerPoint for each lesson that has all the visuals I need. I am attaching a few of them. You can probably see how I use them. I have a picture of my granddog Turbo dressed as Batman. I ask the students to visualize Batman, and then I show Turbo. They all exclaim that that is NOT Batman. It leads into a discussion on imposters. It’s great for the second and third graders!
Dotti
