HI Jean,

At BOCES we are doing SIM writing K-12. I thought I would share with you what we do with K-2. They do the subskills of Fundamentals of SW. They learn the 5 requirements, spend a lot of time learning subjects and verbs, and then work with a modification of PENS and MARK. They are not able yet to say and follow those steps, but I am attaching what we use instead. You can see the visual at the top is a representation of PENS. The thinking cap is “Explore words to fit the formula.” The pencil is the N step, and the last picture represents searching and checking for the 5 requirements. They write 2 sentences following those steps. The box at the bottom is a word box if teachers want to provide them with some subjects and verbs they can use. This gives them a good foundation for starting Fundamentals when they are ready.
