I will point out that

(1) if you go to Google search and type in*either *"Paroedura picta" or 
"Paroedura pictus", the first link you get is Wikipedia.

(2) if you go to Wikipedia and type in*either *"Paroedura picta" or 
"Paroedura pictus", they both take you to the same page.

Many other things, like the Galapagos tortoise, that were formerly 
"misgendered" (the genus Chelonoidis was briefly and erroneously treated 
as feminine) appear in Wikipedia regardless of which spelling of the 
scientific name is used.

This suggests that laypeople, and search engines, are not that seriously 
confused by alternative spellings. So why shouldn't taxonomists use the 
correct alternative?
