About Taxacom | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Taxacom is an e-mail list for biological systematics. Imagined, named, and brought to life by Drs. Patricia Eckel and Richard Zander. Taxacom began its peripatetic existence on a cold and blustery day, January 12, 1987, at the Buffalo Museum of Science, Buffalo, New York, as a dial-up bulletin board system ("BBS") that included "Flora Online" the first 100% online serial publication to receive an ISSN number (ISSN 0892-9106) from the U.S. Library of Congress, and a free Latin translation service. It migrated to a BITNET Listserv at Michigan State University, on Feb 9, 1990, and then to the Harvard University Listserv on November 2, 1992. The service was tracked west on October 20, 1994 to the Univ. of California-Berkeley Listserv, and then finally settled on the Listserv at the Univ. of Kansas Biodiversity Institute on May 1, 1999. It was reborn with GNU Mailman software on April 28, 2006. Peter Rauch (Univ. California, retired) and Jim Beach (Univ. Kansas) have co-managed Taxacom since 1990. The role of Taxacom in the biological systematics community has been examined sociologically by ethnographer Dr. Christine Hine in her 2008 book: Systematics as Cyberscience, MIT Press, ISBN 978-0-262-08371-3. Caveat lector--the list, not the book. Original citation and article link: Zander, R. 1987. TAXACOM, an online service for systematic botany. BioScience 37(8): 616-618.
