Because I like to use my limited memory efficiently. There are many fewer genus names than specific names, and for most genus names you do not have to “learn” their genders. They are just obvious.
Yes, Latin is rarely taught these days. So is taxonomy. Taxonomists are used to learn stuff themselves. I see no issue with teaching yourself basic gender-related Latin grammar for a couple of days. Saves so much time and memory space.

Hi Frank,

Well, that's a really weird argument! So you remember part of the species-group name, and then determine the ending based on the gender of the genus name! Why not just remember the entire species-group name to begin with - the original published name!

Gender agreement serves the purpose that you don't have to memorize every single combination, every single ending. The genus determines the ending of the specific name if it is an adjective (, which are many or most). No memorizing of original spellings necessary. Easy and time-saving.

The main point is that it serves no useful purpose, yet is an effort to do.
Why do it then? Do you like expending effort unnecessarily? As others have pointed out, it is not as simple as you make it out to be anyway.
