Taxacom: Removals of offending scientific names

But relevance would be good and fairly objective restriction. Abba have no relevance to a spider genus. I have already made your point about subjectivity of offensiveness, but in relation to Roger Waters (Pink Floyd). Some see him as a champion of human rights. Others see him as an antisemite/Nazi (mostly because he is critical of Israel's policies on Palestinians). None of this, however, should have any relevance to spider genera!

Personally I love Abba, and I quite like Pink Floyd as well! IMHO there should be little control of who and what you can name a species after. Imposed rules will often be subjective. For example, if you proposed to base the name on a local name for that organism, one problem is that species ranges will often encompass several different human cultures with different languages and names for the organism in question. Choosing one of these local names may upset the peoples using alternative names... I think there should be no restriction about naming species after humans, living or dead, but that there should be a system in place to allow renaming of species who were named after disgraced people. Problem is that this will often also be subjective - e.g. people may take offence at a species being named after an inhuman war criminal like Putin, but others love him..

Here is a 2023 example of just how ridiculous zoological nomenclature is becoming:
Abba new genusEtymology The genus-group name honours the Swedish pop group ABBA whose songs and subsequent musicals Mamma Mia! (2008) and Mamma Mia – Here We Go again! (2018), provided hours of entertainment for the authors.

Not that Abba are offensive (except to my musical ear), but really, for a journal called Evolutionary Systematics (Pensoft!), is this really appropriate? Perhaps the spider genus Abba can compete with the spider genus Pinkfloydia for the most fans! Personally, I'd go for the Floyd!
