Riaan Stals drew attention to this article on ResearchGate:

Mosyakin, S. (2022), If “/Rhodes/-” must fall, who shall fall next?.

In my opinion, Mosyakin makes important and valid arguments against
employing "...politically motivated censorship and totalitarian
cleansing of scientific history, and of the biological nomenclature that
reflects that history." I wish to merely add my two cents worth, that
such cleansing is a cheap way to hide unpleasant truths. If people, with
many of whom I share culture, history, and melanization have been cruel,
stupid, and unscientific I would prefer that their names and actions NOT
be expunged, but rather remain in the online and print literature where
they can be explained, and with which important lessons can be learned
and taught. There is no comparison between, say, scientific names
honoring Cecil Rhodes, and maintaining statues of murderous, racist
traitors to their country like Nathan Bedford Forrest.
