Missouri Botanical Garden Press, part of the Science and Conservation
Division of the Missouri Botanical Garden, plays a key role in the
Garden's mission to discover and share knowledge about plants and their
environment. Through the quarterly journals the Annals of the Missouri
Botanical Garden and Novon, floras, and other books, including the
series Monographs in Systematic Botany from the Missouri Botanical
Garden, MBG Press provides an important outlet for the dissemination of
botanical research.
Summary of the Position: The Associate Editor participates in the
management of journal manuscripts for the two quarterly journals, the
Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden and NOVON, A Journal for
Botanical Nomenclature. This begins in assisting the Scientific Editor
with the peer review process, includes copy and stylistic editing, and
concludes with proof and production aspects for journal articles. This
position will also assume responsibilities for editorial and technical
preparation and production of book-length projects. Desirable technical
skills include graphics (PhotoShop) and/or desktop publishing
(InDesign). Bilingual language skills in Spanish are an optional plus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Copy editing of scientific manuscripts and articles as
assigned; routinely interact with authors by email, phone and FAX
correspondence to confirm manuscript modifications for the journal style
and to clarify the language of the paper.
* Copy edit and conduct preliminary checks on scientific
nomenclature.
* Participates in final editorial quality control for
manuscripts (style and layout), assisting with proof pages and
production aspects.
* Communicates with authors on manuscript and proof queries
(email, phone, FAX)
* Communicates internal design decisions with other editorial
staff and with production vendors (type layout, printers). Production
may include either journal or book-length manuscripts.
* Flexibly interact and problem-solve with other editorial staff
to meet quarterly journal and book deadlines.
Qualifications Include: ,
* Bachelor's degree in humanities or natural sciences, or a
related field is required.
* An equivalent combination of skills and experience may be
considered.
* Minimum of 1 to 3 years in editorial experience in
professional publishing required. Experience with scientific print
periodicals preferred.
* Exceptional organizational, project planning, problem solving,
and time management skills required.
* Excellent proofreading and attention-to-detail skills.
* Strong Customer Service Orientation.
* Strong Technical ability - Proficient experience using
Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and
Windows XP).
* Proficient experience using graphics applications (PhotoShop)
and/or desktop publishing (InDesign) and/or ability and willingness to
learn.
* Demonstrates highest level of professional and ethical
conduct.
* Scheduling flexibility for occasional work on weekends and
evenings is required.
* Must be able to possess and maintain a driver's license.
Required Computer Skills:
* Proficient experience using Microsoft Office suite (i.e.,
Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Windows XP)
* Proficient experience using graphics applications (PhotoShop)
and/or desktop publishing (InDesign) and/or ability and willingness to
learn.
Required Language Skills:
* Fluent English (verbal/written)
* Bilingual - Spanish is a desirable, but not required, skill.
Physical Demands:
* Ability to utilize keyboard (typing), walk about facility
frequently throughout work day, and sit for extended periods of the work
day (may sit up to 50% of work day).
* Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
* Frequent standing, reaching and stooping.
* May be required to perform tasks at varying heights (i.e.,
climb step stools/ladders, etc.)
Work Environment:
* Open common office environment, with sectional partitions and
a dedicated computer workstation, with access to
FAX/printer/scanner/Xerox equipment.
