"PESI - Pan European Species-directories Infrastructure (a 3-year EU project starting May 1, 2008). PESI will provide common access to the European species checklists of terrestrial animals and of plants and marine organisms. 

The Department of Biodiversity Informatics at the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem, Freie Universität Berlin has an immediate opening for a Software Developer - German federal salary level BAT IIa/Ib i.d.F.d.Anw.-TV FUB (Scientist/Senior Scientist).

Main tasks & responsibilities: cooperative application development of a taxonomic information system based on the Common Data Model (http://dev.e-taxonomy.eu/trac/wiki/CommonDataModel) of the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy. User assistance for scientists at the BGBM and at other international institutes. Data imports into a complex taxonomic database structure. Development of interfaces for WWW portals. 

Prerequisites: The candidate must have a university degree, proven knowledge of database development, proficiency in at least one higher programming language, and good English communication skills. 

Desirable: Experience in the development of database web applications, information modelling, and user support. A familiarity with systematic biology as well as experience collaborating in a transnational development project is also advantageous. The candidate should have a willingness to work in and adapt to a complex subject area.

Biodiversity Informatics deals with a highly complex information domain and has direct relevance to some of the most urgent problems of global change and loss of biodiversity. The BDI Department at the BGBM is one of the leaders in this fast-growing field.
