David,
Article 3.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature
officially redates Clerck's 'Aranei Svecici' to 1 January 1758 to
validate them and to be the same as Linnaeus, but gives Clerck
precedence over Linnaeus. Article 3.2 then invalidates everything prior
to 1758 as an official name.

Subject: [Taxacom] names pre-1758
Folks,
The World Spider Catalog has a number of species whose year of
publication
precede 1758, which, according to Article 3 of the ICZN is not
acceptable.
For example:
Salticus scenicus (Clerck, 1757)
Misumena vatia (Clerck, 1757)
etc.
There are at least 45 other Nearctic examples. I'm curious why the
starting
point for nomenclature is arbitrarily fixed at 1 January 1758 when
clearly,
Clerck published these names before Systema Naturae.
