The National Herbarium Netherlands (NHN) is an interuniversity institute
with departments in Leiden, Utrecht and Wageningen.
The Research group Plant diversity of the Indopacific and Tropical Asia
(PITA, NHN-Leiden University Branch) has a vacancy for an
ASSISTENT IN TRAINING (ASSISTENT IN OPLEIDING) (F/M) (38 hours per week)

Project title and definition: Plant diversity assessment of Malesia deduced
from collection databases
The present job capitalises on the growing body of collection data of SE
Asian plant species electronically available at the NHN-L and the linked
databases of partner institutes in SE Asia, which will soon comprise some
250,000 verified records pertaining to c. 5,000 species. Using the
specimen-based information, the central goal is to make a regional analysis
of biogeographic patterns in SE Asia to obtain a broad knowledge of the
distributions of taxa and the turnover in taxa among areas. The objectives
are to map relevant spatial biodiversity patterns to assess biodiversity
and identify high-ranking areas, and to use GIS-techniques to seek
correlations with biotic patterns and abiotic factors to postulate the
major determining geographic and ecological factors and constraints. The
project has to result in a thesis. The job also includes a limited amount
of teaching.
Required:
M.Sc. degree in biology, (physical) geography or related disciplines;
preferably with experience in plant taxonomy, data basing, geo-referencing
and GIS.
The salary is in the first year 1501 per month (gross), increasing to
2143 per month in the fourth year.
The appointment is temporary with a duration of four years.
