I need to buy a device that is big enough to scan an herbarium

such a scanner, and the quality of resultant jpg images? Also cost?

Kew has been using inverted Epson Expression 1640XL A3
scanners since the beginning of the year, scanning at 600dpi to
produce master images, and we think the image quality is fine for
our purposes. Cost in the UK was £1,500-2,000 when we
purchased them.

Advantages: relatively cheap commodity items, high resolution, no
lighting set-up and little focussing required.
Disadvantage: we had to build special cradles to hold the inverted
scanners and crank the specimens up to the glass...
