SLA Business Meeting Minutes

Sport Literature Association Conference 2024

Orono, Maine

• Thank you to Bruce, Matt, Cory, and Joe

• Aethlon Journal and Formatting

o Submission guidelines

• Mark Baumgartner (editor)

• Guidelines currently do not allow simultaneous submission

• Journals don’t work that way any longer for creative work

• Proposing rewritten guidelines that allow folks to send submissions to multiple publications

• Acceptance to Aethlon will require the author to withdraw the submission from any other publications they may have submitted to

• Currently behind on publication for the current issue

• Some writers would be disappointed

• Updating guidelines to allow simultaneous submissions to other journals

• If they get accepted elsewhere, they will notify Aethlon immediately

• Good incentive for editors to not take too long to decide (input from Michele Schiavone)

• Most poetry magazines currently allow simultaneous submissions as well

• New submission guidelines to be typed up again and distributed

• Reminder to submit all Aethlon material in Word format

o Inquiry on whether it would be worth it to look into Submittable

• Cost comes out of pocket if not enough people are submitting

o Because the current issue is behind schedule, there are already authors asking about withdrawing work/marketing elsewhere

• SLA 2025

o June 18-21 (Wednesday to Saturday) in New York

o David Kilpatrick, Mercy College, Host

o Adam Winkel, Program Chair

o Dobbs Ferry on the Hudson

o New residence halls in Dobbs Ferry – that is likely where the conference accommodation will be

• Staying on campus should be affordable (and available)

o Lecture hall already booked for the conference

• SLA 2026

o Dates not decided yet – Iowa City, University of Iowa

o Roxanna Curto and Rebecca Wines, co-hosts

o Scott Palmieri-Program Chair

o University hotel and airport nearby

• SLA 2027

o Limoges, France hosted by Thomas Bauer – organizing hasn’t started yet

• SLA 2028

o Currently accepting proposals to host

• Online attendees

o Paid a fee that supported the graduate student research awards

o Proposing to continue this system if there were no objections

o Joseph, Aurora, and Mizuki received research awards and presented virtually, Hannah received award for Lyle Olsen Graduate Student Essay Contest in person

• Universal acknowledgement that Joe dealing with tech has been a blessing and a half

• Motion to adjourn by Bruce

o Unanimous

Minutes prepared by Hannah Anderson
