[Pols-l] University Policy and Syllabus Development Tool

Hello,

I hope you are well. I am sure you have seen the August 2 University Policy email on what needs to be included on your Syllabus.  I believe most of you have this general template already such as course goals, grading, expectations etc... However, you should take a good look at the Syllabus Development Tool (see attached).

Regarding compliance and when to follow the Syllabus Development Tool, the August 2, 2023 University Policy (email) stated that "Fall 2023: Instructors become familiar with syllabus policy elements and begin aligning their syllabi to the new requirements."  This suggests that instructors can start to review the policy for a hard start in Spring 2024 where all Syllabi are expected to follow the same template.

However, an August 7th e-mail to Chairs and Directors stated the following: "We have had some inquiries about when compliance is necessary for this new policy. The answer is this coming fall 2023. This fall instructors should change their syllabi to bring them into compliance with the policy." By Spring 2024 all departments must have in place procedures for instructor compliance.

Given these two e-mails, we should consider Fall 23 as a soft start to the University Syllabus Policy. For example, I have already completed my Syllabus, but I am going back to add a couple of items that are on the template.

Also, you do not have to organize the syllabus sections such as "Course Requirements", "Grading" etc. in the same order as the template or development tool as long as you include the required sections.

Finally, Linda and I will send you the procedure for submitting your syllabus within a few days.
