Chairs & Directors:

The College has entered a 1-year partnership with Gradescope<https://www.gradescope.com/>: a tool that integrates with blackboard to streamline the tedious parts of grading paper-based and digital assignments while providing detailed insights into student performance. Although Gradescope has typically been widely used by STEM departments, it is a useful tool for any open-ended question (e.g., paragraphs, proofs, diagrams, fill-in-the-blank) that involves numbers/data or a "scripted" response (i.e., there are specific elements/keywords that you are looking for in grading the response). See examples at Gradescope<https://www.gradescope.com/>.

Several faculty in STEM departments used this tool last year and found that it made it feasible to ask and efficiently grade open-ended questions in large classes. This supported a richer assessment of deep learning in foundational courses, setting the stage for student success in subsequent, advanced courses. The College is engaging in a fuller trial of Gradescope for the 2019-20 academic year. If there is sufficient demand by faculty for this tool, the partnership will continue, although we will have to determine an appropriate long-term pricing-payment model. It is possible that departments will be asked to contribute toward paying the cost of the tool in future years. The College will assess use of the tool during the fall semester so that we can discuss an appropriate plan for future years, with input from faculty, chairs, and directors.

Please encourage instructors (faculty, lecturers, GTAs) of foundational courses in your unit to:

  * Attend one of the two virtual workshops in August to learn more about Gradescope (see attached flyer announcing the workshops)
  * Try out Gradescope with at least one assignment so that they can provide feedback on the usefulness of this tool

If you would like a brief demo of the tool at a faculty meeting, let me know and I can help arrange that with Gradescope. In addition, if you have any questions about this tool, you may direct them to me or Doug Ward (dbward at ku.edu<mailto:dbward at ku.edu>) in the Center for Teaching Excellence. [Doug worked with several of the faculty who used Gradescope last year and can assist with implementation questions.]
