The University of Kansas McNair Scholars Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to prepare undergraduate students for graduate study and eventual careers in university teaching and research. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2019-2020 academic year. In order to qualify for participation in the McNair Scholars Program, students must be sophomores, juniors or seniors (graduating December 2020 or later) who are either: low- income, first-generation college students or from groups currently underrepresented in graduate education (African American, Native American, and Hispanic). In addition, applicants must have at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA and plan to attend graduate school.

The McNair Scholars Program provides year round academic support and offers a paid summer research internship ($2800 and 3 hours of research credit).
