Professor Michael Gorham (Russian Studies, University of Florida) will deliver a guest lecture titled "Trolling, Power, and Political Communication in Putin's Russia." Prof. Michael Gorham will offer a brief conceptual history of the notion of "trolling" and explore its implications for politics, culture, and language in contemporary Russia. While focusing on the impact of trolling on domestic Russian politics, Gorham's presentation speaks implicitly to broader tensions underlying public communication and the rhetoric of power in the age of the Internet, the dysfunctional state of political discourse, and the degree to which digitally networked communication systems are or should be implicated as the main cause for verbal degradation of all kinds. Michael Gorham is Professor of Russian Studies at the University of Florida, and Associate Editor of Russian Review and Russian Language Journal.

Professor Seegel's books will be available for purchase with a discount at the event.

KINO Film Series: School Number 3<https://www.facebook.com/events/2725636687469909/>
Thursday, October 24, 7:00-9:00 p.m., Kansas Memorial Union, Malott Room

CREES will be screening a film titled School Number 3 (dir. Georg Genoux and Ielizaveta Smith, 2017, Ukraine and Germany, 116 minutes) in its KINO Film Series. Based on a documentary play by Natalia Vorozhbyt, the film focuses on the lives of high school students from a small town in the Donbas region, in the aftermath of the temporary capture of their hometown by Russian-backed separatists. School Number 3 won the Grand Prix of the Generation 14plus International Jury for the Best Film at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival. Prof. Vitaly Chernetsky (CREES and Slavic) will introduce the movie.
