Taxacom: Journal of Biogeography article request

In former times, one sent a reprint request card (remember those?) to the author, thereby making direct contact and sometimes opening a correspondence that might lead somewhere. And you would get the reprint or a bundle of reprints in the mail.

I often request a pdf from the corresponding author for the same reason. The author will often write back, "Thank you so much for your interest, etc...", because they don't know if anyone outside of the editor or referees has ever looked at the paper. Of course, everyone is downloading anonymously from various sources. If there are firewall, email the author - it usually works and the author is happy to have a bit of recognition.

John,

Authors often put open access papers on ResearchGate in this way,
without actually uploading a copy to the site. You should check the DOI
link on the article RG page to see if it is open access or not, which
can save a lot of time. If a paper is not uploaded the 'Request
full-text' link is automatically placed on the page by RG,

Adam.
