Taxacom: You say frugesis, I say carpesis; no. I say neither

I would suggest that botany/plant science/whatever you want to call it
is sufficiently burdened with abstruse terminology that a neologism for
"fruiting period" is unnecessary and a step in the wrong direction.
Michael Heads' points about existing usage in floras and revisions seem
more valid than any need for terminological symmetry. A specialized
vocabulary for plant behavior and morphology is needed, but to the
greatest extent possible we should be simplifying and demystifying
rather than adding to the effort that amateurs and students must make in
becoming knowledgeable about plants.
Although I am not well-informed on this score, I suspect that similar
considerations apply in languages other than English, even ones with
comparable access to Latin and Greek. And who knows, perhaps in some
language other than English, Greek, or Latin there exists the perfect
word for "fruiting period" that would be equally accessible somehow to
anyone concerned with plants regardless their linguistic background.
Cheers, ---tad.
