Jared, I see your point, but I think this reflects a deeper issue than
sloppy wording or abbreviated reasoning:
'They used their intelligence, imagination, and skills to create something
they'd never seen before, something that had never previously existed'.
He is explicitly locating a centre of origin at the place and time of the
oldest known fossil - i.e., the methodology of William Diller Matthew.
