Yes, it would be a major change, but one IMHO for the best. I'm all for
simplicity, especially when that results in less ambiguity and confusion.
This is how it could work: the ICZN publishes a ruling that states that
from this time onwards, all name combinations published in taxonomic works,
should use the original published species/subspecies name. Large
nomenclatural databases like the Species Files could very easily switch to
using the original published names. Gradually the 'genderified' names would
die out in the literature, and life would be simpler for all who use
scientific names. At least there would be only one valid species
epithet per species, and no need to have to consult some massive database
(which would probably be full of errors, and which would be costly and
difficult to maintain and keep up to date).
