* surely taxonomic search engines could be taught a bit of Latin grammar 
- but even now, given the way google corrects my spelling of so many 
words, has anyone taken some genera where there's dispute about the 
gender of the generic names, to see what search engines find when there 
are specific epithets of different gender?

When you google "Ulmus americanus," you get "Showing results for ulmus 
americana - Search instead for ulmuus americanus" (which get zero hits, 
by the way).
