Again, though, simply stating "version of record" is easy. What if the content changes?

Interestingly, when I saw "version of record" in this context, I
interpreted it as " *a* version of *a* record ", i.e. essentially
ephemeral, not realising that it is a defined term in a different context,
meaning " *the* [fixed or immutable] version of *the* record ". Having
dealt with records (i.e. individual data entries) in data systems for many
years, any of which may go through multiple versions, "version of record"
in the data sense was what came to mind - an unfortunate conflation of
meanings here, I am thinking...
