Dear Ate-alma Cohen,
Thank you for your reply and for the pdf you sent. Thanks also to the
anonymous Taxacom user that forwarded it to you, as I assume from your
reply reaching my rarely used institutional email rather than this one.
Some months ago, I wrote two times to a Naturalis researcher and while all
my other questions were answered, there was absolute silence about the
Martin & Temminck fellowships. It took three emails from my side, over a
timespan of months, to have access to information that could have been one
click away.
Please note that it would be important that the fellowships are described
online. The changed application conditions you mention are not a
justification for the current lack of accessible information. For example,
note how the Finnish EDUFI Fellowships are also to be applied for by hosts
on behalf of applicants and still they are very well-documented online (
https://www.oph.fi/en/development/edufi-fellowship). Information on funded
access to Naturalis collections could be linked to this page (
https://www.naturalis.nl/en/visit-collections). SYNTHESYS access options
are not mentioned either on Naturalis website.
Complete online application information, past applicants, research topics
and amounts awarded over the years would 1) help both applicants and hosts
to save effort and time, 2) avoid a wrong perception among new users about
funded access options not available at Naturalis and 3) facilitate
monitoring of SYNTHESYS program impact on pre-existing access options.
Regarding point 3, it is quite remarkable that from the previous "All
applicants should: a) Not have the Dutch nationality or otherwise not have
worked or studied in the Netherlands for at least five years (preferably
also not EU-citizens, as the Synthesys-programme may be more suitable for
them)" we came to nearly half (40K € out of 85K € in 2020) of the M&T
budget destined to internal, continuation funding: "The following criteria
apply: Early career researcher performed his/her PhD or Postdoctoral
fellowship at Naturalis". Correlation does not imply causation but there
are logical reasons for the European Commission to be interested in
monitoring changes in non-SYNTHESYS access options among SYNTHESYS
partners. An external funder of international access could hardly avoid
raising an eyebrow at local international access being cut by half during
any given period of external funding for the same purpose.
I have copied the Taxacom community, as my "original question" (third
email) was posted on that forum and the information you sent will
definitely be of interest to other colleagues. I have uploaded the M&T 2020
pdf you sent to this address:

Goodmorning Carlos,
The Martin & Temminck fellowships still exist but are no longer as visible
on our website as they used to be because we changed the rules somewhat.
Only a Naturalis PI (the host) is allowed to apply on behalf of the
applicant. The advise is to contact one of the Naturalis PI's and discuss
with them if they would consider supporting your application.
Please find attached the conditions for the fellowships 2020.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Ate-alma Cohen
