Hi Donat,
This is certainly not a list quoted directly from Linnaeus 1758, as the
family-group names it includes were definitely unheard of before ca. 1820.
I'm not fully clear what you're after, but here is a quick-and-dirty
translation of the first half:
Hostes imprimis sunt = "The enemies mainly are"
Motacillae = plural of Motacilla: "wagtails" (but early workers used Motacilla as a genus name for a broad range of small birds with thin bill)
Motacillidae = the family of wagtails (wagtails and pipits)
Hirundines = plural of Hirundo: "swallows" (but early workers used Hirundo as a genus name that also encompassed, i.a., swifts)
Hirundinidae = thefamily of Ssallows (swallows and martins)
Pavones = plural of Pavo: "peafowls"
Bufones = plural of Bufo: "toads"
Bufonidae = the family of toads
Mures = plural of Mus: "mice"
Muridae = the family of mice
Crabrones = plural of Crabro: "hornets"
Vespae = plural of Vespa: "wasps"
Vesidae = ? presumably a typo for Vespidae, family of wasps
Pediculi = plural of Pediculus: "lice"
Pediculidae = the family of lice
Apes fures = plural of Apis furis: "thief bees"; a generic term for parasitic bees, aka "cuckoo bees"
Mellonellae = plural of Mellonella, probably meaning "wax moths", Phalaena mellonella Linnaeus 1758
Fumus = this is the Latin word for "smoke" (I'm unclear whether it can mean something else)
etc. = etc.
I'll leave the "flores melliferi" to a botanist, if there is one out there.
Cheers, L -
