[Taxacom] Gender equality in science

Prague situation was quite atypical. Beetle community was meeting in "Černý Pivovar" [Black Brewery] and not many women would like the beer that was served there (Velkopopovický Kozel, I think). Meetings were quite competitive and I heard about one meeting when one entomologist brought a box with a few extremely rare beetles. Suddenly, the power went off and after the breakers were fixed, the box with rare beetles was nowhere to be found. Too rough for women, especially when the place did not have an extra entrance for Women with Escorts as many civilized countries used to have at that time.

Yeah, something certainly seems fishy; what are you in the beetle community doing to scare away all the women?
In my field (chewing lice), there are plenty of women active in our admittedly very small community. Since Theresa Clay started publishing in the 1930s, women have been at the forefront of this field, and many of the most prolific authors on chewing lice have been (and are) women.
"Gender equal opportunity" is easily achieved by simply posting job ads in places where they are publicly available so that anyone of any gender can see them, and then make sure that there is a proportional representation in the candidates that are invited to interview. Nothing more, nothing less.
People who believe that's all that needs to be done need to seriously reread Kristina's post (incidentally, I was on the hiring committee in the chemistry department of my old university a long time ago, and have the exact same experience: if the final choice was between a man and a woman, the man would get the position based on nebulous criteria that are as indefensible as they are easy to defend).
Cheers,
Daniel
