[Taxacom] Gender equality in science

Yeah, something certainly seems fishy; what are you in the beetle community
doing to scare away all the women?
In my field (chewing lice), there are plenty of women active in our
admittedly very small community. Since Theresa Clay started publishing in
the 1930s, women have been at the forefront of this field, and many of the
most prolific authors on chewing lice have been (and are) women.
"Gender equal opportunity" is easily achieved by simply posting job ads in
places where they are publicly available so that anyone of any gender can
see them, and then make sure that there is a proportional representation in
the candidates that are invited to interview. Nothing more, nothing less.
People who believe that's all that needs to be done need to seriously
reread Kristina's post (incidentally, I was on the hiring committee in the
chemistry department of my old university a long time ago, and have the
exact same experience: if the final choice was between a man and a woman,
the man would get the position based on nebulous criteria that are as
indefensible as they are easy to defend).
Cheers,
Daniel
