[Taxacom] Help with Hycleus oculatus please

Hi Mary,

First a disclaimer: I am not a beetle specialist, however this is the
information I have been able to piece together regarding your query:

1. Hycleus oculatus is cited with the authority (Thunberg, 1791), and
appears to be based on the species previously called Mylabris oculata
Thunberg, 1791. If you search Google Scholar for the latter name you will
find some references. It is also given as the "Cape Mounted Rifles bean
beetle" or "CMR beetle". You can also search for Hycleus oculatus in ION
which leads to the page
http://www.organismnames.com/details.htm?lsid=1481855 from which a search
of Zoological Record is available if you have access to that.

In Hallan's list there is a species listed as accepted named Mylabris
oculata (Thunberg, 1791) which seems to be based on Meloe oculata Thunberg,
1791. At the moment I cannot tell whether or not this is the same as the
above taxon.

2. Hycleus ocellata seems to be different, although this name does not
appear in either ION or GNI. It appears to be based on the name Cerocoma
ocellata Olivier, 1791 (data source is Joel Hallan's Biology Catalog
although the relevant page does not seem to be accessible at the moment).
C. ocellata was the basis for the genus Dices Dejean, 1821 but that genus
is listed in Fauna Europaea as a synonym of Hycleus.
