I don’t know if this will get through to the group or not, but here goes! I have trouble with messages getting to the group, so if this doesn’t get there, someone please re-send it,

If I were a conspiracy theorist, which I'm not, I'd suggest that Pensoft's sales pitch might be "Got research money to ditch? We'll happily take it off your hands! We’re good like that!"

One problem that some (many?) of us have is that ‘our’ institutions place value (both salary and prestige) on publications in journals that are highly ranked in Science Citation Index. Because I publish in the journals with more than 1 point of impact I receive a tax-free bonus that is about half as much as my salary. As well, I am able to apply for grant funds with an increased probability of getting approved because of that status. That extra money allows me to travel to meetings (no public funds for that!) and to pay for my student’s lab and field work and some travel expenses to meetings (also cannot be paid by grant/public funds).

I try to publish some work in free open-access journals (there are some!), but none that I know of are Indexed! So, I have to either publish in non-open-access journals (and pay page charges for at least some of them), which often takes a full year from submission to publication (or more!) or publish in editorials like Pensoft, which are open-access but also charge for publication.

I would like to publish everything in open-access journals and books which are cost-free, but I can’t! The issue is MUCH more complicated than just the issue of pay-or-no-pay!
