Thank you, Tim and all for the great feedback! I will check the suggestions, try to compile a list of the resources, and then post here the list.

Cheers,
Fabio

Subject: Re: [Taxacom] Identification key software

Hi Fabio,
If I had to write an interactive key today...I would use Lucid or Excel as my manager (easy to check both positive and negative dependency issues with Lucid), then save/export and convert the CSV to JSON for incorporation into the web framework of choice. Add linked images across the taxa in the cloud and add a script or two. Now it is visual, translatable, and interactive - requires additional wizardry granted. But will work on anything without a runtime (no JVM or Silverlight required). Fourth-generation example is here http://www.herbarium2.lsu.edu/grass2/.
Still need to concatenate the JS files to make it faster. And this version uses CXML, which is slow. We are getting there... Soon.
Best,
Tim

I would like to hear from people who have experience using Lucid Key or similar software to produce identification keys. Lucid Key has a good reputation but it is pricey, especially if multiple researchers are involved.

One feature that I'm interested is to be able to generate online and mobile keys. I understand that Lucid can do that, but you have to pay fees to have mobile keys produced (which can be expensive). Therefore, I'm also interested in alternatives to Lucid.

Sincerely,
Fabio
