Announcement of an scientific staff position at the Department of Invertebrate Zoology (3rd Zoological Department), Natural History Museum Vienna
This position comprises the scientific management/curatorship of the Collection of Myriapoda at the Natural History Museum Vienna, one of the largest myriapod collections worldwide.
Duties
Research
* planning and realisation of research projects concerning Myriapoda;
* raising external funding for such research projects;
* publication of results in international scientific journals;
* presentation of research at international congresses and workshops.
Curatorship
* curating the myriapod collection of the Natural History Museum, including management, administration and updating of the collection;
* international cooperations;
* improvement of the database;
* administration of the reference library in cooperation with the Department of Libraries of the NHM.
Education and Public Relations
* support of the educational role of the museum (exhibitions, popular science publications, presentations, guided tours; answering zoological requests of students and laypersons) in collaboration with the Department of Exhibition and Education of the NHM;
* cooperation with media and institutions of education (publications, presentations, interviews, advice and projects) in consultation with the Department of Communication and Media of the NHM.
Requirements
* doctoral degree (PhD) in relevant area of the biological sciences, such as zoology, biology, evolutionary biology etc.;
* experience in research with myriapods (e.g., taxonomy, systematics, evolutionary biology, phylogeny, biogeography);
* scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals, in entomology, preferably in myriapodology;
* knowledge of classical and modern methods in taxonomy & systematics (e.g., morphology, molecular genetics);
* some curatorial experience concerning scientific zoological collections;
* willingness to participate in didactic projects and exhibitions;
* excellent knowledge of German language (C 2 according to CEFR), good knowledge of English (B2 according to CEFR);
* ability to work in a team
Additional experiences relevant for the position
* good IT (computing) knowledge, including experience with databases;
* experience in didactic of science for experts, in the public and with media;
* experience in fund-raising.
Salary
* 3.400.- per month pre-tax (14 times per year);
