Torrey Botanical Society is seeking a Manager of Publications to assist the Editor-in-Chief, Brian McCarthy, in publicizing and managing the Journal of The Torrey Botanical Society. The Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society (until 1997 the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club) is the oldest botanical journal in the Americas and has as its primary goal the dissemination of scientific knowledge about plants (including thallopyhtes and fungi). It publishes basic research in all areas of plant biology, except horticulture, with an emphasis on research done in, and about plants of, the Western Hemisphere. The anticipated responsibilities of the Managing Editor are listed below. I would be happy to answer any questions you have and thank you for considering becoming part of our publications team!
Managing Editor Responsibilities:
- act as the voice of the Journal on the Council (meetings are in New York City, but attendance can be via conference call)
- review each Journal issues' inside cover for accuracy
- determine (with the Editor-in-Chief and input from Allen Press) how much to bill authors for color figures, and then invoice authors directly
- tell AP how many copies of the journal to print (calculated by adding institutional subscribers, print members, complimentary issues, and necessary inventory)
- recruit authors and solicit review articles and symposium proceedings with the goal of increasing the number of manuscript submissions to the Journal
- help the Editor-in-Chief identify new Associate editors, as needed
- research best practices and advise the Council, in conjunction with the Publications Committee and the Editor-in-Chief, on:
- online pre-publication of articles in press (available now via BioOne)
- open-source article publishing (available now via BioOne - Managing Editor would be responsible for billing authors for this option)
- posting supplemental materials online (available now via BioOne)
- transitioning to online publishing (possibly exclusively, with the option of on-demand printing - both available at charge through Allen Press)
Sincerely,
Susan
