[Taxacom] Responses from BHL about Nabu Press, etc.

but copies of the tunes aren't being legitimately given away for free to anybody who wants one on the musical equivalent of BHL!

if they were, then do you think anyone would care if I made tapes and sold them?

I guess radio stations do in a sense give away copies of songs to anyone who wants one, on the condition that they aren't copied, but radio stations play the songs when *they* want to, not at the request of the listener (except at very limited "requests" times)

the situation with BHL/Nabu would be analogous to a radio station that always played songs on request (for free), so if you wanted to hear the song *now*, then they would play it for you now!

but if that happened then the whole music business would collapse in flames!

Stephen

OK. Just start playing some of your favorite tunes on your iPod (or weapon of choice). You can hook it up to a speaker and anybody can listen or you can lend it to friends. Guess what will happen if you decide to put some of it on tape and sell the tapes.

>Just because something is made available for free does not mean that it is proper (or legal) for someone else to copy it for profit.  As an example, Zootaxa (and other journal) authors receive a .pdf of their papers. These they can freely distribute to colleagues. They may not, however, allow anyone to copy them for profit.
