[Taxacom] Biodiversity Databases?

Dear Mary,

The Linnaeus II information management tool for taxonomists and biodiversity
scientists has been in use since 1995, with continuous support and updates.
It is reliable software that has been used in more than 100 DVD-ROM and
CD-ROM productions, many of them published on the web as well. Linnaeus II
has three versions: a builder to create your species information system, a
run-time to publish on a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM and a Webpublisher to publish on
a website. Although the webpublisher needs a xml export from the builder
tool , it is a straightforward process to publish your data on the web.
Linnaeus II also supports the option to merge multiple projects into one
project and to export data as XML.

Linnaeus Next Generation (NG) is a new version optimized for on-line
community use, although it will still support offline data entry if needed.
It is scheduled for release medio 2011, a beta version is currently tested
in Tanzania and will be integrated in the TanBIF biodiversity portal.
Linnaeus NG is an online editor to build and update species websites in a
distributed community. Multiple persons can work together on one project and
work can be divided to persons by assigning parts of a project. Data can be
published with a 'push on a button' (on-the-fly, no data dump needed).
Linnaeus NG can be hosted at ETI and used for publishing multiple projects
and to multiple portals (no local installation required), however, other
organizations may also host a Linnaeus NG installation. GBIF has shown
interest to host a Linnaeus NG to make it easy to add Linnaeus NG species
data directly to the GBIF network.

In addition to online date entry, it is also possible to import data from
text-files, from Linnaeus II or from webservices (in the first release the
Catalogue of Life AC webservice will be supported). Linnaeus NG supports
Google Maps in the online version (offline use of Google Maps is prohibited
by Google).

Similar to Linnaeus II, a project can be created free of charge with
Linnaeus NG after registration.

If you have any other questions do not hesitate to contact us!

Best wishes,

Subject: [Taxacom] Biodiversity Databases?

I am interested in opinions about the biodiversity database called Linnaeus
II by ETI Bioinformatics (see http://www.eti.uva.nl/products/linnaeus.php).
If you have experience with this database, I am interested in your general
opinions of the data base. In addition:

1. Does Linnaeus II easily serve data on-line (and on-the-fly, not
necessitating a "data dump")?
2. Can it be used from multiple portals simultaneously?
3. It appears that Linneaus II can make on-the-fly maps (a grid map). Can
the data easily be exported (on-the-fly) to GoogleMaps?
4. Can the data readily be dumped to GBIF (that is, does Linnaeus II use
Darwin Core standards)?

Thanks for any assistance that you can provide!
