Well, I aim to be thorough, so I tried it several times over 
a 16-or-so-hour period, but it does not work for me.

Possibly it is a browser-related problem. Over the past year(s)
I have been writing some HTML-files myself and I have long since 
accepted that HTML-manuals are full of beautifully logical 
structures, that, however, in practice prove not to work 
at all (presumably they will work with the browser they are 
designed for, but that is academic, as far as I am concerned).
