Dear all,
after a break of seven years, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science publishes a scientific journal again. The first issue of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science Annals was published in September:
Woodburne, M.O., Gunnell, G.F. & Stucky, R.K.: Land Mammal Faunas of North America Rise and Fall During the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum. 74 pp.
It comes in three editions:
- an open access online edition available at http://www.dmns.org/main/en/General/Science/Publications/ (including a low resolution version for people with slow internet connections)
- an initial print run for the library exchange program (mary.cytrynbaum[at]dmns.org)
- a print on demand edition for purchase at http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/land-mammal-faunas-of-north-america-rise-and-fall-during-the-early-eocene-climatic-optimum/7751896
The Annals are a peer-reviewed, professionally produced journal that does not require page charges (although encourages voluntary contributions if available). The journal is available electronically free of charge and on paper for low cost ($11.10 + postage for the first issue). For papers containing nomenclatural acts we will make sure that all three editions are published simultaneously.
With this journal, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science wants to demonstrate that it is possible to produce a professional scientific journal without charging authors and/or users substantial sums. Of course, production costs are substantial, and the journal cannot increase its volume without contributions to those costs, but we are confident that we can sustain this model.
The Denver Museum of Nature & Science Annals are primarily for papers dealing with material held or to be deposited at the Museum, papers of Museum staff and regionally relevant papers. DMNS holds the copyright, but the papers are published under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial license. So feel free to copy it, send it around, post it on webpages, whatever is appropriate for the non-commercial dissemination of scientific results.
Cheers
Frank
