The Spiders of North America (Ubick et al. eds) has a chapter by Don Cameron on the origin of spider genus names. However, for Hogna it is not especially helpful. The genus is by Simon (1885) and Simon gave no reason for the name, but Cameron suggests (without conviction!) possibly Hogne , a place in Belgium, or the mythical father of one of the Valkyries: Hogni. So we're none the wiser.
