[Taxacom] Software for building taxonomic catalogues, species lists, etc.

In respect of EDIT, Dave Roberts should have specifically pointed to the DRUPAL-based ScratchPad environment as it serves some of the particular needs indicated by Dave Remsen.

EOL is also contributing to the DRUPAL-based biodiversity information management environment with its LifeDesks, and the code base of ScratchPads and LifeDesks shoudl converge.

The classification editing environment within the LifeDesks (lifedesks.org) is nice.

Combining the idea of social tools, as exemplified by ScratchPads and Lifedesks, with the emerging semantic infrastructure (Global Names Index, Global Names Architecture), our group will invest in interfaces that will allow collective and individual expert investment in on-line taxonomies that will be interoperable with GNI. These will be designed to permit alternative taxonomic points of view. One value of this approach is that any improvements or corrections to a taxonomy will be immediately accessible to those who use the taxonomy. We will be seeking input to set priorities within the next couple of months.

Dear Dave,

Walter Berendsohn made a list at the start of EDIT, the original idea
being to pull these (existing) tools into a workflow aimed at
taxonomic revisions. It turned out that there were too many gaps in
the workflow so they developed the Internet Platform for Cybertaxonomy
(http://wp5.e-taxonomy.eu/blog/index.php).

That original list, though, has been updated and is available at http://www.bdtracker.net/

Cheers, Dave
