*CALL FOR PAPERS*

*Biodiversity*, a peer-reviewed, international journal is publishing a
special issue entitled *Invasive Alien Species in a Changing World*.

* *

Invasive Alien Species (IAS), one of the direct drivers of* *biodiversity loss,
cause tremendous damage to agriculture, forests, and the integrity of native
ecosystems. The global economic loss caused by IAS and the costs of control are
estimated at 1.4 trillion USD per year.  Global trade, tourism and water
transportation by large vessels accelerate the introduction and spread of
IAS. Climate Change may add another level of complexity to the impacts of
IAS. The following subjects will be addressed in this issue:



1.      Ecology and management of terrestrial and aquatic IAS.

2.      IAS and their impacts on agricultural crops, livestock and food
production, poverty, food security, and forests.

3.      Impacts of IAS on native ecosystems and the environment.

4.      Selected cases of IAS around the world, developed programs and
responses.

5.      Impact of climate change on IAS: disease vectors; geographic
distributions; range shifts; development cycles; population trends; etc.

6.      Cooperation in preventing the spread of IAS.

7.      The affect of IAS on the ability of developing nations and island
states to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

8.      IAS and human health: vector-borne diseases; allergies due to pollen
from invasive alien plants; injuries from stings and bites of invasive alien
insects and animals.



*IAS are a global problem so submissions from all countries are encouraged.*
* * The following organizations are participating in the publication of this
issue; Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Environment
Canada, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Global Invasive Species
Programme (GISP), International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO),
International Maritime Organisation (IMO), International Plant Protection
Convention (IPPC), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN),
the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) and the World
Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). This publication receives partial
support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) and the International
Development Research Centre (IDRC). The final selected abstracts for this
issue will be made available for International Biodiversity Day (IBD) 2009.



Please submit your abstracts (250-300 words) to the Managing Editor, Stephen
Aitken, aitken at tc-biodiversity.org. They will be reviewed by a Special Board
of Editors and notification will be given to successful authors by 15 March
2009. This issue is scheduled for publication in August 2009.
