Hi Livia,
Here in Kansas we have a moth named Schinia hanga, which was named
by Strecker in 1898. Perhaps Strecker's work would indicate the meaning
of hanga.
I suspect that it might refer to the Japanese word "hanga",
meaning a woodblock print. Perhaps these butterflies have patterns
which resembled Japanese hanga prints which these lepidopterists had
seen. There are also place names on Easter Island with the name Hanga
in them, but I could find what hanga means in Polynesian.

I would like to ask if anyone could help me with the origin and
meaning of the name "hanga". It was used by Herrich-Schäffer in 1855
for a species of ctenuchid moth. It is an brown and orange species which
type locality is Brazil. I was unable to find anything about this name,
so any help would be great.
Thanks a lot.
Best,
