I cannot answer for horses, but cattle always face into the wind when they
are grazing (which is almost all of the time they are not headed for the
barn). This is basic information if you fly a small plane in the South,
especially many years ago when few towns had an airstrip and even fewer had
a real airport (i.e., a paved runway). In the absence of a windsock, just
find a herd of cows to determine the wind direction.
