The repetition of phytosociological relévés is an adequate measure to
testify environmental changes by looking for vegetation changes.
The applicant will compare old an recent phytosociological data in
relation to environmental changes. Therefore, he/she is expected to have
expertise in the treatment of such data, in statistical methods, and in
vegetation ecology. The successful applicant will cooperate with soil
scientists, metereologists and other ecologists of the LOEWE centre.
Furthermore, the applicant will be responsible for the organization of
advanced training courses. Participation in university teaching and in
the acquisition of external funding is highly desired.
We are looking for a highly motivated person with a strong interest in
biodiversity, vegetation ecology and global change problems. Knowledge
of German language is no precondition, but we expect the willingness to
learn some German during the stay. A valid international driver's
licence is required for field sampling. The applicant should have a PhD
in biology, vegetation ecology or a related discipline. Very good
written and oral English language skills and interest in joining a
multidisciplinary research team are required.

The task involves application (and further development) of ecological
niche models to selected Central European plant species in order to
predict the shift of ecological and climatic envelopes due to climate
change. The focus will be on plant species growing in wet habitats.
The applicant should have studied biology, bioinformatics, mathematics
or a similar field of study. She / he must have strong skills in
statistics, especially geo-statistics and some experience in the field
of botany. Good written and oral English language skills and an interest

The applicant will be responsible for the exposure of selected
indigenous and introduced/exotic aquatic invertebrate species to a range
of environmental stressor (including toxic compounds) under varying
climate conditions. These tests will be run as single species exposures
and in common garden experiments with the aim (1) of a comparative
sensitivity analysis, (2) to investigate the displacement risk for
indigenous by exotic species and (3) to identify key factors that favour
the spreading of exotic species in European surface waters. These
laboratory-based findings will finally be validated under field conditions.
The applicant should hold an earned Diploma or Master degree in biology
or environmental sciences with a focus on experimental aquatic ecology
or ecotoxicology. She or he should already have experiences with the

The candidate will investigate the dynamics of West African savannas
under different climate and land use scenarios. Combined analysis of
available data with new field data from savanna vegetation will serve to
model and map distribution changes under different scenarios. Change
scenarios will be combined with different parameters of ecosystem
services to evaluate the possible consequences of these changes for
rural communities.
Besides field work in Burkina Faso and Benin, compiling of available
data and ecological niche modelling approaches will be performed. The
research project (project leaders are Dr. Karen Hahn-Hadjali, Prof. Dr.
Rüdiger Wittig, Prof. Dr. Georg Zizka) is linked to large international
research projects in the region (BIOTA: www.biota-africa.org

with socio-economists of the Centre investigating ecosystem services of
savannas, and modelling experts.
The applicant should hold a MSc degree/Diploma in biology (botany) or
related fields and should have experience with vegetation ecology, GIS
and ecological niche modelling approaches. Very good written and oral
English language skills, basic knowledge in spoken French and an
interest in joining a multidisciplinary research team are required.
Knowledge of German would be an advantage, and at least the willingness
to learn basic German is required. Experience of field work in Africa
and a participation in university teaching (max. 2 SWS) is desired.

molecular genetics, population genetics and ecology. The successful
applicant will cooperate with various groups of biologists and
palaeontologists working on the reconstruction of evolutionary processes
using resting eggs of crustaceans which will be isolated from lake
sediments. Classical ecological, genetic and genomic methods will be
used to identify the long term consequences of climate change.
Furthermore, the researcher will be responsible for the organisation of
advanced training courses, participation in university teaching and in

Within Research Area C, the Project Group C 5.4 will investigate the
adaptation potential of single species and communities to climate change
in combination with further stressors in model ecosystems or in
multi-generation experiments.
The applicant will be responsible for the planning and establishment of
the new aquatic mesocosm facility of the Research Centre and the
coordination of the experiments. She or he will conduct long duration
experiments under varying climate conditions with a co-exposure of
aquatic invertebrates to biotic and abiotic stressors. The objective is
to analyse impacts on species communities and on basic ecosystem functions.
Furthermore the incumbent will be responsible for the organisation of
advanced training courses. Participation in university teaching and in
the acquisition of external research funding is highly desired.
The applicant should hold an earned Ph.D. in limnology, hydrobiology,
experimental aquatic ecology or ecotoxicology and should already have
experience in planning, operation and analysis of multigeneration or
multispecies studies, preferably on a mesocosm scale. Applicants should

The applicant is expected to have a basic expertise in global climate
modelling and modelling of boundary layer and/or cloud processes. It is
furthermore desired that the candidate has good programming skills. The
successful applicant will cooperate with various groups of biologists
and palaeontologists working on interactions between biosphere and
climate. She or he will be responsible for the implementation of a
dynamic vegetation module into a global general circulation model with a
special emphasis on coupling mechanisms between the biosphere and
boundary layer processes. In close cooperation with other partners of
the research centre, the coupled climate and biosphere model will be
used to investigate the present-day climate.
The applicant should hold an earned master or diploma degree in
