POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Post-Doctoral Position with the Missouri Botanical Garden
Madagascar Catalogue of Vascular Plants Project

The Missouri Botanical Garden is seeking a Post-doctoral Researcher to
assist in the preparation of the on-line Madagascar Catalogue of
Vascular Plants. The position will be based in Antananarivo,
Madagascar, with opportunities for study visits to the Muséum National
d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. The Post-doctoral Researcher will work
closely with a team of Malagasy Catalogue personnel, under the
supervision of senior Catalogue staff in Paris and the U.S (George
Schatz, Pete Lowry and Peter Phillipson). The Catalogue project
involves the evaluation of existing taxonomic work on all groups of
vascular plants from Madagascar; the preparation of species pages;
conservation status evaluations; the linking of taxonomic information to
bibliographic resources and to an extensive living plant and herbarium
specimen image bank; and the compilation of a vernacular names database.
The data and other resources are being delivered through an integrated
online database (www.efloras.org/madagascar). The Post-doctoral
Researcher will participate in all aspects of the project, and may also
undertake synoptic revisionary studies as needed.

The successful candidate should have completed a Ph.D. in Systematic
Botany, including either floristic or revisionary monographic studies,
ideally with an emphasis on the Africa/Madagascar region. A thorough
understanding of taxonomy, botanical nomenclature and experience in
herbarium curation, and facility with computer databases are essential.
The position requires the ability to work in a team environment, and
provide mentoring to Malagasy colleagues. A working knowledge of French
and tropical field experience are highly desirable.

Applications must be received on or before May 15, 2008, and must
include a current CV and a letter outlining the candidate’s specific
qualifications and interests in the project. Applications may be made
in one of two ways:

by e-mail, with attached documents in a standard format (Word, pdf,
rich-text, or html) to peter.phillipson at mobot.org
