Folks,
Rod's link to my blog might have wrapped so try this if you're so inclined:
http://tinyurl.com/2gtq72.

A production version can be seen here: http://tinyurl.com/ypnyck and you're
welcome to get the JavaScript driving this functionality here:
http://canadianarachnology.dyndns.org/bioGUID/bioGUID.js. There's some
simple instructions within that JavaScript to duplicate this on your own
online lists of references. The important thing is that there is next to no
additional mark-up required; if you're relatively comfortable with
copy/paste in HTML and putting a link to a JavaScript file in your page
header, you can offer this functionality to visitors of your online lists of
references. It uses some Flash-based trickery, which would ordinarily
require that Rod open up his server to all incoming domains just as Yahoo
does with its Flash-based APIs. There's a potential security issue for Rod
so my domain is currently the only one playing nicely with his reference
parser. However, I also have some brief instructions within the above
JavaScript file to step around this constraint with a cogent "how-to". The
requirement is a server that handles asp or php files, which probably suits
>80% of web servers out there.

Keepin' it simple,

David P. Shorthouse

Another aspect of this problem is adding links to literature (PDFs,
DOIs, etc.) to existing online bibliographies. David Shorthouse
documents some recent work he and I have been doing to make this
simpler. See http://ispiders.blogspot.com/2007/06/gimme-that-
scientific-paper.html for details.

Regards

Rod
