+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Natural History Museum (NHM), University of Oslo, is the main natural
history museum in Norway. Natural History Museum is organized in 8
departments and employs approximately 150 persons. The 2006 budget is
close to 120 million NOK.
The museum holds 7,3 million objects in its botanical, zoological and
geological collections (www.nhm.uio.no). NHM specimen-level databases
cover several major groups of plants and fungi (bryophytes, vascular
plants, lichens and fungi; in total 2 million records, including field
notes) and insects (250 thousand records). NHM hosts the recently
established Norwegian Node of the Global Biodiversity Information
Facility (GBIF-Norway). The Node shall provide free and universal
electronic access to primary biodiversity data accumulated in databases
maintained by Norwegian museums and other research institutions.
The vacant position is granted by University strategic funding, to
strengthen research which uses biodiversity information made available
by GBIF-Norway. NHM, University of Oslo, hosts GBIF-Norway for the
period 2005-2008. It is the ambition both of NHM and the University to
become a permanent host for the Norwegian GBIF Node. NHM wishes to
strengthen and diversify its current fields of research, particularly
those related to the Museum’s commitments as GBIF Node, and seeks to
appoint an associate professor in biodiversity informatics for a fixed
term of three years. Up to NOK 100,000 may be made available annually to
cover research expenses of the successful applicant.
The successful applicant is expected to do research in biodiversity
informatics in co-operation with the relevant staff. NHM is particularly
interested in appointing a candidate conducting research in species
distribution modelling, using primary biological data made available via
GBIF-Norway. Relevant data mainly consists of records of botanical and
zoological geo-referenced information, collected in Norway and the
Arctic, and stored in databases. NHM is currently building a large
database of environmental information that may serve as a basis for
modelling species distributional relationships. A specific ambition of
NHM is to complement its existing expertise and current research in
biodiversity-related sciences. The successful applicant is expected to
participate in teaching in the area of expertise at graduate level.
The applicant must have excellent communication skills, a Ph.D. or
equivalent degree in biology and a firm background in
biogeography/ecology, postdoctoral experience and a strong publication
record in one or several areas of biodiversity informatics, with
documented skills in analysis and modelling of complex univariate and
multivariate data. Documented experience in scientific analysis of
collection data will be emphasised in the evaluation of candidates.
Teaching experience and good knowledge of taxonomy of at least one group
of plants, fungi or animals will be an advantage.
If a qualified applicant at the Associate Professor level cannot be
found (e.g. all suitable applicants do not have postdoctoral
experience), then one of the applicants may be offered a 3 year
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biodiversity Informatics.

and associate professorships

The University of Oslo seeks to increase the number of women in academic
positions, and women are particularly encouraged to apply.
As a general rule, interviews will be conducted as part of the
appointment process, and applicants may be required to hold a trial lecture.
The University of Oslo has a contract for all employees regarding
acquisition of right to work results.
To apply please send four copies of a covering letter outlining relevant
qualifications and experience, a description of research plan compatible
with the aims of GBIF-Norway, CV, copies of up to 10 relevant
publications, names and addresses of three referees and a statement of
vision for further developments in the field of biodiversity informatics
(all in 4 copies), to: Natural History Museum, University of Oslo,
