Analyst Programmer II

Schedule/shift: Full Time - 37.5 HRS; Weekdays 8:30am - 5:00pm

Job Description:

General Purpose: Work as programmer reporting to the Associate  
Director, Biodiversity Informatics Program at the Yale Peabody Museum  
in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team developing and integrating  
tools for grant funded information systems. This individual will  
develop and deploy cross-platform web applications for managing  
biodiversity information, including molecular and descriptive data  
about biological species.

Essential Duties:

Participate in decision making and make recommendations to the  
Associate Director on multiple research projects development and  
implementation.
Interact on a daily basis with internal and external project  
collaborators (e.g., Faculty, post-docs, graduate students,  
researchers) to promote the goals of our informatics research  
throughout the research community.
Analyze, develop and deploy user-friendly web applications involving  
a high degree of interoperability with external applications and  
backend databases, with primary responsibility for writing and  
documenting code.
Integrate third party APIs, including XML based web services such as  
those offered by GenBank, MorphBank, GBIF, and georeferencing  
applications.
Participate in the analysis, planning and design of new  
functionality, including analysis of user, functional, and technical  
requirements; XML schema development and ongoing evaluations of  
project software development, making recommendations to the Project  
Director and collaborators.
Provide systems support and service for project servers and  
workstations including administering and managing all network  
hardware and software components, system diagnostics and  
troubleshooting including analysis of ongoing performance and system/ 
network interaction.
Work well in team environment and collaborate with staff on various  
projects, including administrators from other areas of Yale.
Develop documentation on methods and usage for electronic publication.
Share knowledge with project team, collaborators, and the museum  
community through discussion, documentation, and participation in  
workshops.
Experience and Training

Bachelor's degree in computer science and three years experience; or  
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Solid foundation and hands-on experience with web application  
development (JSP, PHP, XML) and two or more programming languages.
Experience in SQL, PostgreSQL, and/or MySQL.
PREFERRED: Master's degree and demonstrated ability to develop and  
manage web applications and database backends. Knowledge of Java,  
Ajax, Axis, Soap, Perl, Python, C, Unix, and Linux operating systems.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated understanding of working in an educational or research  
setting.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment including those  
with cross-organizational boundaries.
Interact with internal contacts such as faculty, staff and students,  
and external contacts such as vendors, consultants and product  
specialists.
Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent written, verbal and project management skills.
Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams with  
flexible and changing assignments.
