Ivory-billed Woodpecker not extinct

Robin,
      I just found out that the formal announcement is being made at the Dept. of Interior Building (Sidney Yates Auditorium) about half an hour from now (11:30 EDT).  As for hordes of humans descending on the area, this story has been kept under wraps for quite some time, and hopefully sufficient precautions have been taken (see link below about sighting two years ago, but just posted yesterday).  But hopefully interested birders will instead begin searching areas of adjacent states, especially Louisiana and Mississippi.  In other words, channel their interest into something productive.  Also money for habitat protection in this area should now be easier to raise.
