Family Cepolidae - bandfishes
(1.) *Cepola rubescens* was described by Linneaus not C. W. Michahellis.
*Cepola rubescens* Linneaus 1766, p. 445.
(2.) *Cepola rubescens* is considered a synonym of *Cepola macrophthalma*
(Linnaeus, 1758) by Monod, 1973, *Cepola rubescens* is considered valid
by Quero, 1990. {SEE *Ophidion macrophthalmum* Linneaus, 1758, p. 259}
(3.) You spelled the specific name *Cepola taenia* Linnaeus, 1758, p. 303,
incorrectly. *Cepola taenia* Linnaeus, 1758 is considered a synonym of
*Cepola macrophthalma* (Linnaeus, 1758) by Monod, 1973. *Cepola taenia*
Linnaeus, 1758 is considered a synonym of *Cepola rubescens* Linneaus
1766, by Quero, 1990.
Three of the eight fish papers published by C. W. Michahellis (who died in
1835) have the title you quoted.
Michahellis, C. W. 1829. Neue Fische des adriatischen Meers. Isis (Oken)
Vol. 22(9):1011-1015.
Michahellis, C. W. 1830. Neue Fische des adriatischen Meers. Isis (Oken)
Vol. 23(3):252-255.
Michahellis, C. W. 1831. Neue Fische des adriatischen Meers. Isis (Oken)
No. 1:199-204.
You could have looked up all the information above yourself just by going
to the CAS website and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Please note *Cobitis taenia* Linneaus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (ed. 10) V.
1:303, is the type species of *Cobitis* Linnaeus, 1758. Op. 809.
However, In Jordan's (1917) Genera of Fishes, Part 1. He cites *Cepola*
in Linnaeus (1764, p. 63) and the first time in Systema Nature, Ed. 12,
1766, p. 445. Therefore, there seems to be some confusion between
*Cobitis taenia* Linneaus, 1758, p. 303, and *Cepola rubescens* Linneaus
1764, p. 63, where he states it is the same species as *Cepola taenia*
Linneaus 1766, p. 445, and *Ophidion macrophthalmum* Linneaus, 1758, p.
259. Eschmeyer et ali. (1990, Vol. 2) write on p. 975, "We suggest
following priority and treating this species [ie. *Ophidion
macrophthalmum*= my insert] as valid. Cepolidae."
Linnaeus, Carolus. 1764. Museum Adolphi-Frederici, II. p. 63.
