Liquid for leps

My friend, Jim Harvey, who used to work for federal forestry in Vernon, BC,
developed a technique with lep larvae. He used wax. He would match the
color of the larva as best he could by mixing colors into wax. He would
then make a small slit above the anus and into the rectum, then with a glass
rod, he would roll the rod from the larva's head to its anus, removing as
much of the innards as he could. He would then inject the liquid wax into
the larva, slightly distending it, put a flattened pin (sort of like a
minuten nadln) into the anus or slit, and VOILA!!, he had a larva that was
nearly identical - always - to the original.
Jim still lives in Vernon. If anyone is interested, I can get his phone
number and e-mail.
Robin.

Subject: Liquid for leps
Dear list members,
It seems possible (as someone told me) to preserve lepidopterous larvae,
such as cutworms, in a solution that will leave the colors intact (useful
for identification). Anyone knows such a mix that uses ethanol, glycerin
and/or vinegar, etc, etc ?
Thanks
