I believe that there is more information available in our hymenoptera databases
than is alluded to in this message. I have developed two web portals for
access to data, the Hymenoptera On-Line Database cited above as well as a
Hymenoptera Name Server at

 http://atbi.biosci.ohio-state.edu:8880/hymenoptera/nomenclator.home_page

The former gives access to a wide range of types of information: taxonomic
bibliographies, distribution maps, and specimen data as well as a means of
walking through the classification of the order. The Name Server is designed to
provide basic information about names: the author, status of the name,
citation of original description, synonyms, alternative combinations.

Our goal is to be comprehensive for the order: we are not there yet, but there
is substantially more data than for the single superfamily Proctotrupoidea.
That is my own area of taxonomic expertise and that is where we have the most
depth. However, we have information on:

122,968 species group names (only 12.3% of them proctos)
13,866 genus group names (6.7% proctos)

98,015 valid species group names (6.6% proctos)
7,427 valid generic names (6.7% proctos)

This includes species lists on Chalcidoidea, Proctotrupoidea, Platygasteroidea,
Ceraphronoidea, Chrysidoidea, Vespidae, Formicidae, and Ichneumonidae as well
as the generic names in Symphyta and Apoidea. Older information has been
incorporated on the Sphecoidea and Braconidae. As I said, our goal is to be a
comprehensive source of information. I sincerely welcome contributions and
collaborations toward that end.
